World We Imagine part 1

Alex Balian

Novogratz’s excerpt inspires a vision of interconnectedness, urging us to create a more equitable world. For me, the first step toward making the world a better place would be investing my time and resources into sustainable initiatives. After graduation, I hope to dedicate myself to creating innovative financial models that empower underserved communities and help them gain access to clean energy and economic opportunities. By blending my knowledge of finance and my passion for sustainability, I could help build a system where individuals are not only uplifted but also encouraged to contribute to the well-being of others.

Ultimately, I hope to be able to live as a true global citizen, as Novogratz writes, by embracing the accountability that comes with privilege and opportunity. This means approaching challenges with humility and a willingness to learn from diverse perspectives. My vision after graduation is one where dreams are not just personal but connected with collective progress. Whether through investments or mentorship, I dream to help build a future that provides dignity and hope for all.

  1. I appreciate your point about humility and willingness to learn from diverse perspectives. I think where people struggle with making major change is having the humility and acceptance to understand they have made a mistake and move forward by fixing it. There are multitude of directions you could go with this, whether community groups, one on one mentorship, class courses, etc! I would suggest beginning with one sector/topic of sustainability and narrowing down from there. Maybe considering sustainability is a hot topic, something like transportation could be interesting to read up on.

  3. I really like how your dream is rooted in not only what you're passionate about, but also in your own knowledge and skillset. I like that you are actively thinking about how what you are learning in school can be used in the future to make a positive difference on our society. A comment I have is that your idea right now is still very broad. Something that you might want to hone in on is the financial model aspect. At first glance, I don't see how they can be used to help promote sustainability in underserved communities, but I am excited to see you proving me wrong!

  4. Hi Alex- I find the idea of creating innovative financial models to incentivize innovation very interesting. I think a lot of good can be done through a financial lens. One cool fund I have been looking at personally has been Bain Capital's Double Impact fund. I have put the link to their strategy statement below if you'd like to take a look. One cool piece I'd recommend reading is Creating Shared Value by Michael Porter. That is another eye opening piece I think would help you to approach this goal!

  5. Hey Alex! Your vision of the world for after you graduate is awesome. I think it's a great idea to be able to combine finance and sustainability where you are able to provide a good deal of input for both. I agree that you should always approach new challenges with humility and willingness to learn in the process. Overall, I think you have a very realistic and inspiring objective for the ideal world and I am glad you found inspiration from Novogratz.
